Monday Manners: On Being a Southern Lady

"Etiquette is something that has traditionally been very important in the South.  The South is world famous for its "Southern Hospitality."  Manners are important to Southerners, no matter what status in life one holds.  While manners seem to be slipping in our modern society, there is still a place for manners, and good manners can help anyone move between different social classes and assist in advancing one's career."

I thought y'all would like this article I found, on being a Southern lady. I definitely think some of it is extremely outdated, but interesting just the same.

“What is a Lady"
by Varina Jefferson Davis
(Note:  While the definition of a lady provided here may be a little dated, the basic concepts never go out of style.
Varina Davis’ recommendations here are as sound and applicable today as they were in the 19th century.)

A lady is simply someone who cares about herself and others.  She sees that her garments are clean and neatly pressed, her shoes are polished, and every button is in place.  She is neat and tidy even at the breakfast table and wishes to appear well to her own family.  She keeps her hair clean and well-groomed and never puts her hand to her hair to re-arrange it or search for loose pins while others can see.

(From left to right, Vivien Leigh (played Scarlett), Clark Gable (played Rhett), Margaret Mitchell (wrote GWTW), David Selznick (produced GWTW), and Olivia de Havilland (played Melanie)

A lady does not monopolize the conversation.  She does not talk of herself and her own affairs but listens with well-simulated interest to a story that bores her.  This is the mark of good breeding.  She does not sit apart with one or two friends but makes the gentle effort to assure a good time for all with pleasant conversation.  A lady does not say or do anything that will upset those around her or make them uncomfortable.

A lady does not let any man kiss her or put his arm around her unless she is engaged to be married to him, and even then she should be a little stingy with her favors.

A lady, when she brushes off her hat, does not forget to brush away the cobwebs…in her brain.  She does not conclude that every man who has said something pleasant to her has fallen in love with her.

A lady is possessed of refinement, which prevents her from all fidgeting, from playing with her handkerchief, her umbrella, her purse, or whatever may be in her hands.  When she sits down she remains quietly, her hands resting easily without movement and her whole figure is filled with repose.  She is calm, composed, self-controlled at all times, yet there are no airs about her.  These qualities are what keep her from talking and laughing loudly, and they prevent her from hurting the feelings of anyone.

A lady does not grow weary in well-doing but encourages herself by trying to live up to her ideal of a woman.

Thirsty Thursday: Aveda Comforting Tea

I hope everyone is having a great Thursday morning.  We're getting ready to head to preschool to drop off W, and then headed to E's 15-month check-up.  Hope it goes well.  I'm picking up a friend's child from her preschool this afternoon, and she's staying overnight with us.  She and W have been friends since birth, so it will kind of be like their first sleepover.  Should be fun!

For today's Thirsty Thursday, I thought I'd choose my favorite tea, Aveda Comforting Tea.  I love this stuff.  For awhile, I used to drink about three cups every time I went to the salon.  Now, I have some at home, and just love it!  It comes in either tea bags or ground tea.  Not only do I love Aveda's tea, but I love their hair and face products, as well.  The best part is all of their products are organic.

Thanks to everyone who entered my giveaway.  I'll be choosing a winner today, and announcing it tomorrow.  Good luck!

After bible study this morning, and lunch with my mom, the girls took a great, LONG nap.  Unfortunately, while fixing dinner, E got hungry enough to eat...

Monday Manners: Sale Price is Better than Full Price...

...so you HAVE to take advantage, right?  I mean, how often do sales really occur?  Probably more than we care to mention, but when you've got your item on a particular piece, you hope it's on sale at that time.  We'll have to wait and see today at 11:00.  Kate Spade and Kate Spade Home are on Rue La La today!

Also, just a heads up, on Wednesday, Ray-Ban and Hanky Panky will be on Rue La La.
If you haven't been invited to Rue La La yet, click here for your free invitation.

"All I can say is that there's a sweetness here, a Southern sweetness, that makes sweet music...  If I had to tell somebody who had never been to the South, who had never heard of soul music, what it was, I'd just have to tell him that it's music from the heart, from the pulse, from the innermost feeling. That's my soul; that's how I sing. And that's the South." ~ Al Green (our wedding song was "Let's Stay Together")

Fashion Friday: Wish List Item for Easter

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!  I'd love to wear this on Easter.  It's from Lilly Pulitzer's spring line.  Hope it's in the cards!

A quote from W, from yesterday, after her nap:

Me: "W, it's WARM outside, we get to go..."
W: [excited] "Go make SNOWBALLS!"

Obviously, she has no idea in the difference between warm and cold weather.

Oh, and someone asked where in Mexico the place was, that my friend was staying next week.  The resort is called Live Aqua.  Click here if you'd like more information.

And in response to another comment, Izze is non-alcoholic, very much like Clearly Canadian.

Thirsty Thursday: Izze

W went back to preschool today!  I know she was so excited to get back to her friends and teachers.  Our house is clean, thanks to Gedalva and Fran!  And, it's going to be in the upper 60s today.  I'm planning on relaxing outside and reading a book, while the girls nap.  Thursday is going to be a great day!  Hope yours is too!

My latest MUST drink is Izze.  Have you tried it yet?  We hit up Costco the other day, and stocked up on an assortment of Izze flavors.  My favorite is by far the blackberry.  If you haven't given it a try yet, you should.  It's delicious!

Oh, how I'd love to be sipping an Izze (or a tropical drink) here.  My best friend is lucky enough to be relaxing here in Mexico next week!  A Valentine's surprise from her sweet husband.  Soooo jealous!!  Although I have nothing to complain about.  The hubs got me a pink sapphire ring with diamonds around it.  I'll have to post a picture of it soon.  I was very impressed.

Happy Thursday!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day, to all of my fabulous readers!  We're off to the park for a picnic in just a bit, it's supposed to get up to 67 today.  In the 20s last week, 60s this week, global warming, perhaps?

I hope y'all have a great start to the week!  Oh, and I completely forgot to post my Weekend Inspiration, this past weekend, so I'm posting it now.  Love to all of you!

Fashion Friday: Nordstrom's 10 Best Spring Trends

Happy Friday!  It's a beautiful, COLD (23 degrees) morning here.  I've got blueberry muffins baking in the oven, and just fixed hub's breakfast of eggs and toast too (brownie points).  Seems like it's going to be a great start to a great weekend!  Not only that, but the first time in forever I got 10 whopping hours of sleep last night!

With spring looks arriving everywhere, I thought I'd present Nordstrom's 10 best spring trends, and pick my favorite looks, to fit each trend.  I wish the weather would start looking like spring sometime soon, so some of these trends could be worn, sooner than later!

1. Pale Neutrals

2. The Fit and Flare Dress

3. The Kitten Heel

4. The Romantic Blouse

5. The Framed Satchel

6. Flared and Wide-Leg Pants

7. Maxi Dresses and Skirts

8. Statement Rings

9. Minimal Jackets

10. Modern Oxfords

So what do you think?  Will you be sporting any of these spring trends?
I'm really LOVING the Rebecca Taylor blouse and Milly dress!

I'm going to start posting W's quotes on here, as often as I can, because so many times I forget them.  This morning when she woke up...

W: "What did you dream about?"
Me: "Oh, W, did you have a dream?  What was it about?"
W: "Reindeers."

Thirsty Thursday: The Reef Drink

One of the blogs I read, Let the Tide Pull Your Dreams Ashore featured The Reef Drink last week, and I just had to share it!  I really would love to try this one, as soon as the weather gets warmer, or maybe for Valentine's Day?

Ingredients:
1/2 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz. Gin
1/2 oz. Light Rum
1/2 oz. Triple Sec
Pineapple Juice
Orange Juice
Splash of Grenadine

Pour the vodka, gin, rum and triple sec into a glass with ice. Fill it with equal parts of orange juice and pineapple juice. Add a splash of grenadine (and I'd garnish it with a strawberry!).  These cocktails even come with a warning...they ruin lives!  Haha!

W had her Valentine's Day party at preschool, today.  Another mother and I hosted it.  The children enjoyed lots of delicious treats, singing and dancing, and got to go home with soft, brown teddy bears.  So much fun!

Tuesday Trends: Sweet Birdie's Nest Giveaway

Hope y'all are having a wonderful Tuesday!  I wanted to share a great Etsy shop that a neighbor down the street has, called Sweet Birdie's Nest.  She and her sister have a love for all things beautiful, whimsical, and personalized, so it's no wonder they created such a cute Etsy shop that embodies all three.  It's a perfect shop for finding great, quality stationery, announcements, invitations, gift tags, banners and cupcake toppers, which are all press printed on premium linen card stock.  They will also custom-design something for you, as well!  I seriously love it all, as I'm obsessed with paper products, so it was hard to choose my favorites.  Here are just a few of them.

Sweet Birdie's Nest also has a blog, where they share creative craft ideas, with step-by-step instructions, and different party themes with amazing photos, and yummy food ideas.  Their Twitter handle is @2sweetbirdies.

And the best part?  Sweet Birdie's Nest is giving away 25 5x7 or 4x6 invitations or 25 flat correspondence cards.  The winner can choose.  The winner can also choose from a design currently in the shop or create a custom design.

To all of my readers, Sweet Birdie's Nest is offering 15% off through March 2nd.  Make sure you enter SWEETSOUTHERNPREP in the Order Notes section, to get the discount.

Here's how to enter the giveaway:

1 Entry:  Become a follower (or let me know you already are)
Extra Entry:  Grab my button (or let me know you already have it)
Extra Entry:  Blog about the giveaway on your blog
Extra Entry:  "Like" Sweet Birdie's Nest on Facebook
Extra Entry:  Follow Sweet Birdie's Nest's blog
Extra Entry:  Tell me your favorite item from Sweet Birdie's Nest
Extra Entry:  Tweet about the giveaway (make sure to tell me your name on Twitter)
Extra Entry:  Add my giveaway to your sidebar
An extra entry each for every time someone refers you in their comments, about how they found out about the giveaway (I'll keep track of this.).  Endless entries!

Please let me know in your comments, how many entries you get.  The easiest way would be to list it on your comments, 1., 2., 3., etc in one comment box.  That would help organize it for me a great deal.  There are lots of ways to get extra entries.  The giveaway will end on Wednesday, February 23rd, at 11:59pm.  I'll choose a winner on Thursday, February 24th, and announce the winner the next day on Friday's post.

Good luck, y'all!  And thanks again for reading!
