Wednesday Whereabouts

This past week, we visited my grandparents for the day.  They live about an hour and a half away.  It had been awhile since we had visited them because my grandmother has been so sick, but thankfully on this day she was up for some visitors.  While she smiled and listened, the girls talked to her and sang her many songs, from Edelweiss to You Are My Sunshine.
The girls also helped my grandfather make his specialty - cheese straws - they are beyond delicious!  I'm not kidding when I say that the girls pretty much finished off this ENTIRE baking sheet of them.
My grandfather, visiting with L (aka Casper - lol)
Exhausted after a fun day.  It unexpectedly started pouring when we were about to leave.  Thankfully, my sister came prepared, and lent E her jacket.

Last week, W's class had a Father/Daughter Coffee.  It was the cutest thing.  W was so proud to bring her daddy to school with her.

Tuesday Trends: Just Ducky Giveaway!

Hope y'all are having a wonderful Tuesday so far.  It's sunny and beautiful today, in the upper 60's!
To celebrate, I thought I'd throw a giveaway, for a lucky reader to enjoy a great spring outfit, for a great price!  Just Ducky Originals is based out of my home state, North Carolina, near the mountains of Asheville.  I thought your children, your grandchildren and/or your friends' children would love these precious outfits.  They have so many items to choose from, and many of them are available for personalization.

From Just Ducky's website:

Q: How did the company begin?
A: (Owner Sallie Broach) I started the company back in 1980 and have been working here actively ever since.  I guess you can call me a true entrepreneur because I am not trained in business.  I never felt restricted by rules of 'well, don't try that because the business model says that won't work'.  I found quickly that our strength was more working one-on-one with the customers and being able to give them what they wanted.

Q: What's special about the Just Ducky manufacturing process?
A: (Owner Sallie Broach) I think it was in about 1990, we bought a small factory out in kind-of the country of Buncombe County, which is near Asheville. All of the custom garments begin at our factory and end at our factory, but in the middle they go out to many women who sew in their homes and because this is kind-of a rural community, it's hard for some of these women to find work. And so they can take these garments home, put them together, bring them back in and get paid, and they don't have to worry about going further into the city for other work.

Just Ducky Originals sent me a dress for W, and she obviously loves it (see images below).  While it may be cool this time of year here, she managed to wear it this past Friday, when the weather was a bit warmer.  I anticipate she'll be wearing it a lot this spring and summer.  The  dress is the perfect blue, and goes so well with her eyes.  While I had the option to monogram it, I chose not to, in order to give little E a chance to wear it, after W outgrows it.

Here are more of my Just Ducky favorites...

You can even customize it to match your child's outfit.

They offer an array of fun colors!
Last year the girls wore metallic gold, I'm thinking this year they'll wear white.

Monday Manners: Big Event Etiquette

While looking around online today, I found a great list of common big event etiquette mistakes, and thought I'd share them with you.

Not responding to an invitation even if it doesn’t say RSVP.
It’s kind to let people know that you received the invitation and whether or not you can come. If the hosts are using a caterer, they are counting by the head, which is expensive. So be really attentive to let them know whether you’re coming or not while thanking them for the invitation. Remember, people can’t plan on a response like, “We’ll try to come”.

Not arriving on time.
You know how terrible it can be when people come in during the ceremony and stand up in the middle of the aisle looking for a place to sit. It shows inconsideration for the honoree and other guests.

Talking in a full voice.
Again, this shows inconsideration. It’s one thing to whisper, “Pass the program” and another to hold a full voice conversation during the program. It becomes very distracting and bothersome for others.

Not anticipating whom you’ll meet.
You can prime the conversation pump by going over whom you’re likely to see at the event. Inform the family on the way there about names, relationships and other important information such as, “She’s married to so and so”, “His grandfather passed away last month”, and so on. This helps the family or guests to walk across that threshold into a room of friends or familiar people rather than into a group of strangers (and getting caught at thinking “Who are you??”).

Only talking to the people you know.
Make it a point to meet two or three new people; act like a host. Perhaps you’ve been to an event where you’re new, don’t know anybody and nobody talks to you. As adults it’s incumbent on us to make the effort to make friends, but it’s so much nicer when the people who are around bring you in.
Do you agree with these?  Could you add more?

Speaking of big events, what did y'all think of the Oscars last night?  I stayed up to the very end, and loved every minute of it - okay, except for the Ryan Seacrest vs. The Dictator incident on the red carpet (not funny at all), but the awards show was wonderful!  I'm sooo glad Octavia won!  She was incredible in The Help - actually, all the actors were, but she deserved it the most!  Meryl Streep's speech was one of the best - she's seriously so cool and grounded for being such an amazing actress.  And I'm so happy Christopher Plummer won too...I've loved him ever since he played Captain Von Trapp.  Did you see the way he hopped up those stairs, at 82??  And after winning so many awards, including Best Picture, I've got to see The Artist!

And without further ado, my top three picks for best dressed from the Academy Awards...
Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton
You know me, bright colors are my favorite!
Love her in almost everything she wears.
Love the coral dress with the pink clutch. POP!

Maria Menounos in Maria Lucia Hohan
Everything about this dress and hair was gorgeous!

Emma Stone in Giambatista Valli
Y'all are going to think I'm crazy for loving this one, but I think it was perfect for her!
I loved when she went blonde and wore a peach dress last year,
and this one looked lovely on her - I could see Nicole Kidman wearing something like this, too.

P.S. While I wasn't in love with Esperanza's dress, I need her album asap!!  How amazing was her rendition of What a Wonderful World?
And how cute were they?  I've got to see The Artist!

Fashion Friday: Spring Lilly Favorites

Good Friday morning, y'all!  After much anticipation, here are my favorites from Lilly Pulitzer's Spring line.  Hope you love them as much as I do!

I love how unique, but still classic this dress is.  While I don't wear white dresses, I'm hoping it comes out in another color later.  Perfect for a bride at a shower, sorority girls for initiation and a great graduation dress.

I love the colors of this dress.  Such bright spring colors.  The fabric is great.  No static to worry about.
And what better than a Mini Adelson Dress for your minnie to match you.
Love this top.  Reminds me a lot of the Elsa, always a plus in my book.

Love this fun combination!  The Via Tunic in navy goes so well with the Main Line Jeans.  Hope they come out with this color online soon.  Right now, they're only available in white.
How simple and lovely is this dress?  It's also available in black, but I must say I do love the Azalea Pink!  Pair it with a cardigan, and it's perfect for spring.
Throw on a great bauble necklace with any color Cassie top...
or Rebecca Sweater and you're good to go anywhere this season.
I tried this one on at the new South Park store, and need it in my closet asap!
There's always room for another Murfee Scarf in your closet, and this is a great print!
At only $10, the Market Tote is perfect to use anywhere, but I especially enjoy them at the beach and pool.  No need to worry about getting your favorite bag sandy, wet or dirty from the elements, just use a market tote instead.
For me, it's the perfect spring accessory.

Lilly Pulitzer has a book coming out in July - Lilly: Palm Beach, Tropical Exuberance, and a Birth of a Fashion Legend. It looks like it'll be a great read...

"The real story behind a very private American fashion icon—Lilly Pulitzer.  Today, Lilly Pulitzer's iconic brand of clean-cut, vibrantly printed clothes called "Lillys" can be spotted everywhere. What began decades ago as a snob uniform in Palm Beach became a general fashion craze and, later, an American classic. In contrast to the high visibility of her brand, Lilly Pulitzer has largely kept her tumultuous personal story to herself. Bursting forth into glossy fame from a protected low-key world of great wealth and high society, through heartbreaks, treacheries, scandals, and losses, her life, told in detail here for the first time, is every bit as colorful and exciting as her designs."

You can pre-order it here for only $16.95, retails for $25.95.

Are y'all enjoying the Lilly Spring line?  What are your favorites this season?

Hope y'all have a wonderful weekend!

Thirsty Thursday: The Lady Sybil (Crawley)

Alright, so I've obviously been on a Downton Abbey kick this week.  I apologize for those of you not viewing the series, I'll be back to regular preppy posting tomorrow, with my Spring Lilly favorites!
My friend Amanda emailed this yummy cocktail to me, and I knew I had to use it for my Thirsty Thursday post this week.  Enjoy!
The Lady Sybil

From The Kitchn: "Now that Downton Abbey season 2 is over, we're all waiting with bated (pun intended) breath to see what will happen in season 3. Until then, enjoy a little break from the action...and enjoy a cocktail inspired by your favorite British drama.
Sybil, the youngest, and my (and maybe your) personal favorite. Sybil is so easy to like...she's sweet without being saccharine, headstrong, and a bit stubborn. For her, I created a cocktail with delicate, rarefied flavors (St. Germain and champagne) that's grounded with something a bit more everyman (London dry gin). The end product is sweet, lovely, and stronger than you'd expect."
Makes 1 cocktail
1 oz gin
3/4 oz St. Germain elderflower liqueur
Brut champagne, chilled

Combine the gin and St. Germain over ice. Shake and strain into a flute. Top with champagne.
Be prepared, I've heard it's strong!

Has anyone else received their Elizabeth McKay items from her Rue La La sale?  I got mine in yesterday, and was very pleased with all of my items.  The trench cape is so unique - and very Downton Abbey if I do say so myself...wish I would have picked it up in the camel color, as well.
How did your items work out?

Interesting fact (someone left this comment on a blog, about the dog on Downton Abbey):
"Apparently the dog from Season 1 didn't get on with the dogs that live at Highclere (the estate which poses as Downton), so they got a new dog in and instead of pretending it was the same dog they created 'Isis'. I think the names of the dogs may be in honor of the fact that Lord Carnarvon, the Earl who lived at Highclere funded the excavation of Tutenkhamun's tomb (King Tut) and subsequently died in Egypt (his death fuelled the idea that there was a curse on the tomb, but was more likely due to blood poisoning)."

Hope y'all have a fabulous Thursday!
We have a second showing on our house tomorrow, by an interested client.  Wish us luck!
