How I Do It: Laundry
(For six!)
Sorting it. Confession: I don’t. I know I’m crazy, but I’ve never separated my laundry into colored, whites, towels, etc. Even in college, when it was just me, I never did. It all goes in together, whatever is laying around, I grab it all (towels, children’s clothes, my clothes, etc.) and toss it in. I also never used baby detergent, like Dreft. Thankfully, the kids have never had a reaction to it, so that saves me an extra load too. Trust me, I would have used it if their skin was affected, but it wasn’t.
Having a laundry lady. In my dreams! Growing up, I was fortunate to have a lady that did our laundry. And then once I was college-bound, it was me that did the laundry. That’s probably why I never learned that you were supposed to separate the laundry. The hubs showed me how, once we were married, but I still don’t do it. And honestly, yes, he showed me how, but if it were up to him, the laundry would never be done. He’ll be the first to admit he’s a slob. Oh, and that one time he tried, he accidentally washed the laundry with a red crayon…
The perfect fold. Working retail early on has its perks. My sisters will even tell you to this day that by working at Banana Republic in high school for a stint, I perfected my ability to fold clothes. It’s super neat. Seriously, you should see my t-shirt drawer. I honestly LOVE folding laundry. It’s meditative or something.
My washer and dryer are in the basement. Out of sight, out of mind. While it does have its perks, I’m not constantly staring at a pile of laundry everyday, it does have its disadvantages too. The laundry pile can get rather large, when all I’m doing it tossing down dirty clothes for a few days, before finally deciding to get it done. And committing to getting it done, can entail up to five loads at a time…
Dirty everything 24-7. The neverending story. I don’t think I go one day where the laundry bin is completely empty. I learned to accept that awhile ago. Having four young kids means that someone always has something dirty to throw in there, not to mention my clothes, and the hubs’. And I also always change my kiddos into pajamas when they nap, so I bring it on myself, that I have so much laundry. I don’t even want to think about the laundry when they’re older, when their clothes are bigger. We’ll leave that for another post, a few years from now!

so my momma had me try to do my laundry when i was 16 and just told me to read the labels to figure it out, well jeans say "wash separately" so guess who washed 5 pairs of jeans one at a time…i will never live that one down haha
now that i'm in college it all goes in one cold load, at $1.50 a load I don't have the money to do all those loads!

That is hilarious!!! And I totally agree about the laundry in college – probably why I never sorted it!
I don't sort my loads either! It all just goes in one load. When I first had to do my own laudry in college I would just buy new stuff(underwear included) instead of washing it, then it got expensive (and my parents got mad!) and I had to actaully learn to do it.. Now, doing laundry for 2 people can get so overwhelming, I don't know how you do it with 6!
That is so me in college!! I still do that with the kids sometimes. When I get behind, I just buy them more pjs! Lol!
Yep, I do the same thing. I basically just run around the house a couple times per day grabbing laundry and once the washer's pretty full I do a load. It works for me!
I never sort my laundry! My mom is always telling me I should but if I did that it would take me forever to get it done! I also find folding laundry extremely relaxing. I love the smell of fresh clothes when their warm and out of the dryer, its so soothing and makes me excited to get everything folded and put away. Love the Tory bag!
I have never totally "finished" laundry. My mother-in-law calls me "Our Lady of Perpetual Laundry" 😉
Yep, I can totally relate! My mom and my mother-in-law both still have laundry ladies too. I'm like, please share the love! Lol.
I am a "sorter" and with a family of ten, I usually have enough laundry to sort into each color group. I used to dread laundry but now that I have the front load W/D I can do the laundry in half the time because of the large size loads I can do…one entire day long now instead of two days worth! Everyone has their own basket and I just fold the clothes into each basket and then the children have to put their own away. I don't love folding, but I do love ironing…not that I have the time to iron anything these days!

I can't believe that you change them all into pjs before naptime!!!! How did I not know this?!?!? I have a super hard time with just 4 of us (you have seen the pile of clothes on my bed) so I have no idea how you do it. I do not mind washing but I hate folding so maybe we do each for each other? It's therapeutic for me to separate and wash but I want to burn them after that! See you tomorrow!
Yeah, I know I'm crazy about their pjs… At least, that will get easier when they start giving up naps! 🙂

Love that bag and the laundry post! I didn't do my own laundry till college either but I totally enjoy it! I do separate somewhat but not as much as my mom…she is the laundry separating queen! and irons everything!
I do not subscribe to this method, but my good friend says that she washes all the laundry from the day and folds it before heading to bed so that nothing is dirty in the morning. She also runs her dishwasher and unloads it before heading to bed. She's a decorator and her house is always perfect. I wish I had it in me. I guess my wine and Duck Dynasty are just too important!
Laundry is hardest for me. I am going to try your all color method:)) It is never done here. I am really good at cleaning the house though! I turn on a timer for 10 minutes and focus on one room. I even tell the kids I am doing a 10 minute clean and to give me 10 minutes time to clean! It really works. Try it!! Hard to do with laundry:( Thanks for the tips.
